Periodontal surgery, also known as pocket removal or gum surgery, is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. It involves bending the gum back away from the tooth enough for the periodontist to see the root canal surfaces. Once visible, deep embedded bacterial deposits in the tooth can be removed. Thus, the root surfaces can once again be acceptable to the body, and the gingiva can reattach. Surgical intervention also makes it possible to graft bone and partially repair damage
Periodontal surgery is necessary when the tissue around the teeth is not healthy and cannot be repaired without a surgical procedure
